SUPER DAVEY TAKES 2nd IN LEGENDS - SEMI PRO
Super Davey Matthews of Douglasville, conquered quarter midgets at a early age taking several National, Regional and Local Championship titles then moved on to Bandoleros in 2007. He quickly excelled with the guidance of BDI and Bob Dillner Racing last summer. As a bandolero rookie, he achieved the Georgia State Bandits Championship and 5th in the INEX National points.
On his 12th birthday this past fall, he received a Legend car painted black with the familiar #41 on the side. He was ready to make the gutsy move to aggressive class of Legends racing. Having only run a couple of races in the beginner class of Young Lions, Matthews felt comfortable and wanted to move to the Semi Pro division to gain maximum experience from the veteran racers in that class.
Not only did he gain experience and knowledge, he quickly learned how to wheel the Legend around the local tracks of Georgia this winter. On January 26th, Super Davey took on Watermelon Capital Speedway - a big and fast high banked 3/8 mile owned by Ken Ragan’s brother, Marvin. After a rain soaked track from Saturday’s downpour ended, the track was dried but green. SD patiently felt out his #41 Marines hot rod in the heat race of the Semi Pro division coming in a respectable 4th. For the feature, the track officials ran the Semi Pro and the Pro Legend drivers together, putting Davey in the 13th starting position. He did not hesitate as he picked off his competitors one by one, making his way towards the front of the seasoned class of drivers. With several restarts in the mix, Matthews held his ground and took a little bit more, passing for 2nd amongst the Semi Pro drivers with 3 laps to go. He crossed the finish line with an astounding 2nd place finish in the Semi Pro Division.
Matthews said “After the heat race we made a small adjustment and my car was so hooked up for the feature I could just keep it on the bottom and no one could get around me.”
