Atlanta Motor Speedway’s 10th Anniversary season of Thursday Thunder continued with week three of competition tonight for HomeLife Communities Mascot Mania night.
The feature event for tonight was a mascot golf cart race between the Atlanta area mascots including Buzz from Georgia Tech, Pounce from Georgia State University, Thrash from the Atlanta Thrashers, Harry from the Atlanta Hawks, Homer from the Atlanta Braves, Arby’s Oven Mitt and Aaron’s Lucky Dog. Homer had the race in the bag until Harry decided to take over his vehicle allowing Lucky Dog to pass them all and take the win. All the mascots had a great time and continued racing even after the checkered flag waved.
A random draw after the heat races inverted the top four qualifiers in each division for the feature event and the division points leader was relegated to start in the fifth row.
Tyler Armstrong started on the pole for the Curry’s Collision Center Chargers feature. A fierce battle for the lead was swapped between Alex Roberts, Cameron Michael and Armstrong, with Armstrong the victor. Armstrong logged his first win of this summer season of Thursday Thunder.
The Back Yard Burgers division began with points leader Brian Weimer starting from the rear. Weimer worked his way through the field and in only 12 laps was the point man of the race and held on to score his second Roadster win in a row.
The Greencastle Dental Young Guns and Morley Company Outlaws competed in a combined feature with Jordan Coker out front. Early in the race, Ronnie Bassett Jr. passed Coker for the lead and never let go to. Young Gun Bassett snared his first victory of the season with Darrel Banks the highest finishing Outlaw.
Wade Brewer brought the field to the green for the Tanger Outlet Centers Masters feature. On lap 4, Jeff Haynie became the race leader and put some distance between him and the rest of the competitors. No one could challenge him for the win, so Haynie captured his second straight win of the Thursday Thunder season.
The Adrenalin Powersports Pro feature started with Beau Slocumb as the pole sitter. On lap two, points leader Casey Roderick took over the lead and checked out from the rest of the field. Roderick crossed the finish line first scoring his second win in three weeks during AMS’ Thursday Thunder.
Austin Hill paced the field to the green for the Fuddrucker’s Semi-Pro feature. Austin ran a smooth line around the track driving away from the rest of the field. Hill earned his first win of the Thursday Thunder season.
The Zaxby’s Bandits class closed the show with Kyle Benjamin on the point. Mason Massey worked his way through the field taking over the top spot. This is Massey’s third season of Thursday Thunder and his posted his first ever Thursday Thunder win tonight leaving him humbled and speechless in victory lane.
Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Thursday Thunder will return on June 21 for the fourth of 10 weeks of Legends, Bandolero and Thunder Roadster racing. Next week will feature the Georgia Power “Run What Ya Brung” night where fans will race each other in their own cars during intermission.
